I live in a city where there's been protests and riots every day for a week (most not reported in the media), some violent, and I've seen a few protests go right by my home, and I notice three demographics:
Highschool students out for a day of civic participation, probably egged on by their teachers... the weather's been good, who wants to sit in a classroom on a beautiful fall day?
Gender studies types- blue hair, tats... you'd be mad too if you suddenly realized you were going to have to work for a living.
Sketchy types waiting for the looting to start- you see them every time there is a big sports victory, why should this be any different?
There may be hardcore ideologues, professional agitators and spooky big-money behind it all, but I've not seen any evidence.
I think there are CTR and Soros funded "protest teams" out there, but with that big arrest in Oakland it was painfully obvious from the mugshots that the rioters were home-grown hipster freakballs.
