I suspect that it will be a short lived fad.

The reason why i came to this conclusion is from looking into niantic.

The company appears to be a joint venture between nintendo and google. It is a small sized outfit for such a very popular game. As a result, there are a lot of problems coming out with this game. These range from cheaters, server issues, and security issues.

I don't think they anticipated that this game would be as popular as it is. I am also curious as to how they are making money off of it, as they will need a huge injection of cash and manpower to fix all the issues that are coming up.

And they'll get it too, this is nintendo and google after all. If it has potential for being a moneymaker (and it could be a huge one) they wont let this go away. Maybe they'll treat this as a beta, and release a new app in several months. PGo is the first true proof of concept and viability for augmented reality gaming. After this, it might not be a pokemon game, but the results will be the same.
