I'm in a situation where I returned to the US. I only have a foreign drivers license and I don't want a domestic one. In every other country, I can use a foreign license to buy alcohol or get into clubs. They all respect other licenses. Most US states do not. Now most US states don't care, but the Pacific North West does...a lot.
I don't want a US license. I don't even want to be here really and am trying to get another visa to leave. But it's very interesting how much of you is tied to an irreplaceable digital identity.
This is unprecedented to any other time period in the last 10,000 years of human civilization. You can look up labeling theory on how this affects us.
If you have no birth certificate or SSN number (and you're not Amish) and make it to adulthood -- you will have a very difficult time legitimately creating an identity.
I don't want to carry the most important document I have around with me either. Yes it's state by state. I get that, but I'm saying in the rest of the planet no individual bouncer cares that you use a foreign ID. The Pacific North Western US does .. and to be honest it feels really fucking insulting. Their laws specifically allows Canadian licenses .. like any Canadian license (even from Qubec or the Yukon) as if bouncers will even know what those should look like.
I feel like it's really arrogant and bullshit. It shows how disconnected is America from the fact the rest of the world exists. ID checking is just meant to be a deterrent as well. It shouldn't trump common sense.
I'm not arguing with ya, just pointing it out. North Carolina is the same way. You have to have a valid drivers license, state issued ID, military ID, or passport. Trust me, the bouncers here could care less either, but there jobs are on the line if they don't enforce it, and they can be fined by the state.

The license for use in a bar or club, is state by state, not a national law of any sort. Some places will let you use your passport instead.
