Here in the US we're constantly hearing about the dangers of radon gas, how it's the second leading cause of lung cancer, bla, bla, bla. We're asked to call a number and have some government officials go all through our homes to check for it. I think what they're really doing is using fear tactics in order to gain access to homes to see; how many guns are there, is there an ammunition stockpile, is there a supply of survival food and first aid supplies, what kinds of books there are, what kind of videos one has, etc. If they were really just concerned about radon gas they would just say on the announcements how to insure that you don't have a problem. All that is required to fix a radon problem or to insure that you never have one is to have proper ventilation in low areas with poor air flow. In other words, just get a damn electric fan! That's all it takes to fix or prevent a radon problem. If they were really concerned they would just tell us that on the announcements, instead of asking for permission to come dig through our homes.

A home inspector placed a little disk in my basement for awhile, 3 days maybe? Then we had to ship it off. It came back positive for Radeon Gas. So they had to drill a 6 in hole in my basement floor and put in a fan. It was a total pain in the ass... That was a long time ago and at a different house than i live in now.
The home inspector placed it in the house for 3 days when we had no furniture or even lived in the house.

Went thru the same thing when I sold my house. Inspector put an air sampler in basement for a couple days. Result came back negative though, thank goodness.
