The article doesn't discuss the biggest dangers to letting kids use the internet and technology. Right now your kids can do several things out of their bedroom that could seriously fuck them over for life. They can sext each other and get hit with child porn possession and distribution, not to mention creation. You think it's insane but prosecutors are licking their lips at putting another "monster" behind bars and making sure they get punished. It seems retarded to throw kids behind bars and on sex offenders lists for taking nude selfies, but it looks really good on paper since most people will just assume it was someone who deserved it.
The other thing is that with the amount of social media out there, your kids will be building a huge history of all of their fuckups and all the stupid shit they do as children. Most kids are retarded and use their real names on the internet, but even the ones that don't can be linked to their real name. Facebook is extremely good at finding shit out about you without you even giving them any info. This history will be around forever and every future employer will have access to it. There are already companies out there whose sole purpose is to find out everything about you, and connect all of your accounts and everything you say and do online to your real identity.
Very good point! I've heard Facebook makes shadow profiles for everyone that is mentioned, photographed, and videoed on their site. it sounds something the NSA would do. (also heard NSA has been proved unreliable do to the amount of Trolls. one good thing about them i guess d:)
They have psuedo profiles for people who don't have accounts, so when you sign up, you're slowly given a list of friends, potential photos you've been in, etc. It's not really a shadow-profile. It's just regular profile data that FB already gathered.
You can say, "I don't have a Facebook account," but you really do. You just haven't claimed it yet.
They also run facial recognition scans on everyone. With tagged photos, they know both what you look like, who you know, and where you've been. Their algorithms might suck today, but in 5-10 years, they can basically run them on people in the background and find you. Went to some event and you're in the picture? They'll know, even if the person who posted the picture has no clue who you are. Imagine doing this for shit like protests, or pro/anti events that your employer might not agree with.
It can get pretty crazy. Even if you don't have a facebook or social media anything. If someone tags you, then every picture on the internet will compromise you. Some chick took a selfie at a party? And you're in the background drinking and having fun? Well now they'll know. Crazy times ahead. And what happens if there's someone who looks 90% just like you and it tags them as you? Have fun explaining why you went to wherever to whomever.
