If I remember correctly YouTube has been making money for years now, unless that was short lived.

You could write a selenium script that opens youtube and just views videos on an infinite loop, but that would cost you bandwidth. Same with uploading. You could fuck with their stats though. You could find a video of static or white noise and automate a shitload of views to it, or automate meaningless comments.

You'd probably get banned pretty quick buy hey, python has libraries that pick a proxy for you.

I didn't even know youtube had ads for years, never watched it on anything but my pc and I have had some form of ad blocking forever. I've had to go to the hardware level now, but for years you could block alot in just the host file and then browser extensions.

By watching videos on youtube you are sending a clear message to the content creators that focusing on other hosting sites is a waste of time. They see 1,000,000 views on their youtube video and 10,000 on the one they host on another site. So when google comes in and tells those content creators to change their message or be demonetized they listen because no one would support them on any other platform.

That's how a small group can control an entire culture.

You give them your data by using their services. The platform is a net financial negative on its surface however where it makes all of that money back isn't in the ads it plays on videos but in what they know about such a large segment of the population. If they know you're a right wing fanatic that sends them death threats at Google hq they sell that data to companies.

Yes they also, separately, have an interest in restricting the data you see to try and propagandise you. But if the dataset Google uses dropped off a cliff in terms of freshness that would be where they get hurt.
