Named the most influential rabbi in America by Newsweek Magazine, Rabbi David Wolpe recently admitted that Jews are a race, NOT a religion.

In Eric Weinstein's podcast, starting at 5:22, Weinstein admits that he is a 5th generation "Atheist" Jew. Weinstein goes on to say that it's a "mystery" to him that every single rabbi he knows admits that they don't actually believe in the Jewish God of the old testament. How can this be if Judaism is a religion?

Rabbi Wolpe replies by explicitly stating that Judaism is NOT a religion.

He says Christianity is a religion because If tomorrow I believe in Jesus, I'm Christian. If the day after I don't, I'm not. But If a Jew stops believing in the Jewish religious beliefs, he is still a Jew.

So what are the Jewish people? Now Rabbi Wolpe has to talk in code, because it's politically forbidden to admit that Jews are a race.

Rabbi Wolpe says I would use the word "tribe" but "tribe" has negative connotations. So he does believe they are a "tribe", but he can't say that because it's politically incorrect.

Ultimately Rabbi Wolpe says that the Jewish people are a "family".

Of course, scientifically speaking, a racial group is basically a large extended family group.

This is why scientists say that Jews are a racial group.

In fact, scientists studying the genetic basis for mental illnesses like to study Jews because "Ashkenazi Jews are considered to be an especially homogeneous group, in terms of genetics."

They are both and always have been. Being Jewish is an ethnicity. You descend from the same ancestors. Judaism is the ancestral culture/religion of the Jewish people. You can be an atheist Jew or a practicing Jew, or a Christian or Muslim Jew. Because being a Jew refers to BOTH the ancestry and the religion.

You can't be a Muslim who practices Judaism though. Because Judaism refers only to the religion.

I don't understand why this is so hard for people to grasp. People fall into three false dilemma trap and think it's only one or the other and don't actually understand what the words mean.

I'm not sure if race is accurate. Jew God dogma was heavily proselytized from the time of Abraham up until now. Lot's of different human breeds became Jews. I'll do some searching and get some info for you on how Abraham, along with his family and servants left Sumeria a man of great wealth and he would send out this congregation to proselytize to the communities they encountered to build his base.
