Meryl Chertoff

Meryl Chertoff Director, Justice and Society Program, The Aspen Institute Meryl Justin Chertoff is Director of The Aspen Institute’s Justice and Society Program. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown Law School, where she teaches about state government, intergovernmental affairs, and state courts. From 2006-2009, Ms. Chertoff was Director of the Sandra Day O’Connor Project on the State of the Judiciary at Georgetown Law School, studying and educating the public about federal and state courts.

Ms. Chertoff served in the Office of Legislative Affairs at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), participating in the agency’s transition into the Department of Homeland Security in 2003.

She has also been a legislative relations professional, Director of New Jersey’s Washington, D.C. Office under two governors, and legislative counsel to the Chair of the New Jersey State Assembly Appropriations Committee. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe College and earned her J.D. from Harvard Law School. She practiced law for a number of years in New York City and New Jersey, and served as law clerk to Honorable Myron H. WASHINGTON, D.C. –The Chertoff Group (TCG) is pleased to announce that Ambassador Michael Gfoeller has joined the firm’s Board of Advisors. He brings decades of experience in foreign affairs and international security with more than two decades of experience at the U.S. Department of State.

Ambassador Gfoeller served 26 years as a U.S. diplomat including service in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Russia, Armenia, Moldova, Poland, and Belgium, retiring from the State Department in 2010. During his tenure, he served as Political Advisor and Regional Coordinator for South Central Iraq in the Coalition Provisional Authority and was Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge’ d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he coordinated interagency counterterrorism operations.

From 2008 to 2010, he was the senior political advisor to General David Petraeus, then commander of U.S. Central Command, focusing on counterterrorism, international security, and diplomacy. After his retirement in 2010, he served as head of Middle East and North African (MENA) affairs at Exxon Mobil’s International Government Relations Department. Ambassador Gfoeller has taught at Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, and co-authored the book United by the Caspian.

Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller is a veteran U.S. Diplomat, having joined the Department of State in 1984. Her previous foreign postings have included: Poland, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the Soviet Union, Belgium, Russia, and Turkmenistan. She has served as a Deputy Principal Officer in Russia and Deputy Chief of Mission in Turkmenistan. She most recently served as Consul General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Ms. Gfoeller was awarded the Rusk Fellowship in 2000, and taught Masters degree classes in political science at Georgetown University and wrote a book on U.S. foreign policy interests in the Caspian Basin. She speaks Russian, French, Polish, Italian, Spanish, and Arabic. She is a member of numerous foreign affairs organizations, including the Council of Foreign Relations.

Ms. Gfoeller has a Bachelors of Science and a Masters of Science from Georgetown University, in addition to a Certificate of International Law Studies from the University of Florence.
